METER, in a narrow sense, refers to the number of RHYTHMIC units (“FEET”) in a given LINE. Any number of units is theoretically possible, but the majority of lines in English have three, four, or five feet. The names of the meters all end in –meter, preceded by a Greek number. The most familiar are MONOMETER (one), DIMETER (two), TRIMETER (three), TETRAMETER (four), PENTAMETER (five), HEXAMETER (six), and HEPTAMETER (seven). In many narrative and dramatic forms, the meter is consistent throughout; in others, especially lyric stanzas, the meter changes from line to line, usually according to an established pattern.
